Photorelays (MOSFET Output)

Photorelays are a type of photocouplers consisting of an LED optically coupled with a MOSFET. Photorelays offer many advantages over mechanical relays such as long service life, low-current drive and fast response. Photorelays are widely used for contact switching in semiconductor test systems, security systems, etc. Toshiba offers low RON, low COFF photorelays in ultra-small VSON/S-VSON packages for semiconductor test system applications, and general-purpose photorelays in various packages featuring high current and high off-state voltage.

Product Highlight

1-Form-B Photorelay With 1.2A On-State Current Rating

A convenient and reliable alternative to conventional mechanical relays

Supplied in a compact DIP6 package, the TLP4590A 1-Form-B (normally closed) photorelay has an on-state current rating of 1.2A, which represents a 140% improvement on the company’s previous-generation TLP4176A device. In addition, it has a 60V off-state output terminal voltage rating. Its sensitivity is enhanced thanks to the low trigger LED current of 2mA (maximum) exhibited.  It's 5,000Vrms (minimum) isolation voltage and support for a -40°C to 110°C operational temperature range allows it to be employed in harsh environments and situations where elevated levels of insulation performance are required.  Key applications are those relating to building automation - including heating, ventilation, air conditioning and security systems, as well as fire alarms. The TLP4590A can also be used in various forms of industrial equipment, such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), I/O interfaces and sensor control hardware.

Contact (Mechanical Relay) and Contactless (Semiconductor Relay)
What is a photorelay?
Relays are electrically operated switches and can be broadly classified into contact (mechanical) and contactless (semiconductor) types. Photorelays are semiconductor relays consisting of an LED optically coupled to a MOSFET and are used mainly as signal relay replacements. Having no movable contacts, photorelays are known to have better long-term reliability than mechanical relays.
