Overcurrent protection function

Overcurrent protection
Image diagram of overcurrent protection operation

The overcurrent protection function of the load switch IC is a function that protects the device from degradation or breakdown caused by heat generated by the device itself by suppressing the output current when the output VOUT terminal is in an unintended short-circuit mode. It is also called current limit or OCP (Over Current Protection). Toshiba load switch ICs employ a foldback-type protection circuit control method, which contributes to safety design.

We mass-produce a load switch IC with a built-in overcurrent protection function of the foldback type.
For example, when the output current reaches the internal overcurrent limit when the load is short-circuited, the MOSFET inside the load switch is turned off, thereby reducing the output voltage VOUT and limiting the output current IOUT. This function suppresses element heat generation during overcurrent operation. The overcurrent value has a fixed value for each product, and the product lineup covers a wide range from a low current value of several hundred mA to over 1.0 A.
