Advanced graphics in a highly integrated low power wearable solution

Today’s high-end wearables such as smart watches are characterized by a sophisticated graphical user interface (GUI) that often includes touch operation. Until now, this functionality has been power-hungry, reducing useful battery life of these essential devices. However, the game has changed with the latest addition to Toshiba Electronics Europe's line-up of ApP LiteTM application processors.

The TZ1200 contains four intertwined hardware graphics engines, each with a dedicated role; blitting, rotation, transformation and drawing.

The TZ1200 processor is based on a high-performance 32-bit ARM® Cortex®-M4F processor capable of operating up to 120MHz. Intelligent on-board power management means the TZ1200 consumes just 70μA/MHz in active mode, giving smart watches a time between charges of about one month with a 350mAh battery.

The TZ1200 contains four intertwined hardware graphics engines, each with a dedicated role; blitting, rotation, transformation and drawing.

The drawing engine is capable of 1/16 sub-pixel accuracy allowing it to draw and anti-alias the lines, rectangles and triangles necessary to create sophisticated graphics. The advanced bus architecture of the TZ1200 means that multiple shapes can be drawn and crawled with <1% CPU loading at high frame rates.

The blitting and rotation engines work together to provide Bit BLock Transfer (BitBLT), alpha blending and rasterizing as well as image scaling, shearing and rotation. By only refreshing the elements that have changed, processing power and, ultimately, battery life is saved. Moving from one display to another smoothly and seamlessly can be achieved through a combination of the blitting and rotation engines.

The transformation engine supports a number of sophisticated functions including object scaling and 3D-like effects. For example, graphical menu selection can be achieved by giving the frontmost item prominence through scaling. Together with the rotation engine, the transformation engine can create a 3D-perspective transformation allowing the TZ1200 to offer exciting 3D-like graphics animation possibilities, all at low CPU load and with miserly power consumption.

One of the most powerful capabilities of the transformation engine is the ability to merge flat 2D images with 3D rendering to create images with depth, such as rendering a pseudo-3D globe from a flat map. Shadow blending completes the effect giving the feel of directional light to the display, thereby creating the sophisticated styling demanded by modern wearable devices.
