Bluetooth® - the smart choice for Smart Home applications

With a plethora of low power wireless technologies to choose from, it can be challenging to determine which is the best choice for Smart Home applications. One item to consider is the maturity of the standards behind the radio solution and its protocol. In this respect, Bluetooth is far ahead of the alternatives.

It was back in 1998 that the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) was formed, with Toshiba being one of the five original members. Since then, more than 30,000 companies have joined. The Bluetooth SIG works to define everything from the physical layer of the radio, right up to the application layer, which is crucial for inter-vendor interoperability. As the standard develops to meet new needs and challenges of the market, every aspect of each layer of the protocol stack can be modified and improved.

This made Bluetooth the radio technology of choice for Toshiba’s Smart Plug reference design, a Bluetooth-enabled power plug that can be used to control appliances and monitor their power consumption. Built around the TC35678, this integrated Bluetooth solution can be customized to implement a wide range of applications. It provides full support for all Bluetooth LE 4.2 optional features and includes one of the industry’s first Bluetooth SIG qualified Mesh 1.0 implementations.

And it isn't just engineers that understand the benefits of Bluetooth. According to a study by Lux Insights in 2016, 92% of all consumers are aware of the Bluetooth brand. Furthermore, 62% indicated that they would have a preference for a Bluetooth enabled product making it the ideal technology for home automation. With Bluetooth integrated into every smartphone and tablet, all that is required is a simple app to explore the power measurement and control features of the Smart Plug. This provides developers with a springboard to customizing the features to their needs or integrating the functionality into their own Smart Home concept.
