Microcontrollers for Air-Conditioners

Air conditioners are the first inverter-controlled domestic appliance. These days, air conditioners feature a self-cleaning capability and a vector-controlled compressor motor for energy saving have become popular. There are two types of microcontrollers for air conditioners; microcontrollers for motors to control compressors and ventilation fans of outdoor units, and the main microcontrollers to control indoor units. Those microcontrollers are mainly for 5V power supply. High-performance 32-bit microcontrollers featuring low noise and low power consumption using Vector control are also used for outdoor units. For indoor units, demands for a wide range of features are growing, such as low power consumption achieved by controlling airflow with a motion sensor, control for fine-tuned temperature, better human interface and monitoring operating conditions.

The Basic Concept of The Product

Motor Control Microcontrollers (with Vector Engine)
Recently, high-level of control technology is employed to improve efficiency and smooth rotation. Toshiba now widen our portfolio of microcontrollers containing a Vector Engine (M370 Group (Note)), for controlling multiple motors efficiently and smoothly. The Vector Engine is a dedicated co-processor that automatically performs basic processing of the vector control (coordinate transformation, aspect conversion and SIN/COS computation) and executes the PI controller to control electric current. The Vector Engine, operating in conjunction with 3-phase PWM output circuit and 12-bit AD converter, reduces software processing and CPU load.
Circuits of the Vector Engine consist of the following sections:
  • Arithmetic unit to execute processing (tasks for Vector Engine).
  • Scheduler to control the operation of tasks.
  • Interface between an AD converter and PWM output.
An interrupt signal from an AD converter activates the Vector Engine. The Vector Engine acquires data from the AD conversion result register and executes computing such as coordinate transformation and aspect conversion. Complex computation using complicated software is no longer required, because the Vector Engine automatically performs the PI control for controlling speed, aspect conversion using space vector and puts data into the PWM output circuit. Users can significantly reduce the CPU load (Using our sample software, software processing time was 1/4). Users can also use their software for controlling flexible parts such as rotor position and speed.
5V Microcontrollers for General Applications (with Multi-purpose Timers)
To serve the needs of improved systems for controlling indoor units, we offer multi-purpose microcontrollers (M380 Group (Note)) for 5V power supply containing a multi-purpose timer (timer/counter + IGBT + PMD control), which are ideal for relatively simple motor control (sensorless square-wave control and sensored sine-sine wave control), such as power device control, indoor ventilation fans and louver motors. The TMPM380 is provided as a 100-pin package. This product can control two motors using a multi-purpose timer.
