Toshiba Announces First MN Series HDDs Expanding Disk Drive Model Category Line-up

08 February 2017

The MN HDD Series, available in 4TB[1], 6TB and 8TB, defines a new value point in Toshiba’s capacity Client HDD model categories

Düsseldorf, Germany, February 08, 2017 — Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE) announces the first MN Series HDDs, bridging the value gap between top-end enterprise capacity HDDs and entry-level desktop HDDs, while still delivering 7,200rpm rotational latency performance.

The MN Series offers up to 8TB capacity in a 3.5-inch form factor for a broad range of file and object storage applications. With a 6 Gbit/s[2] SATA interface, 7,200 rotational speed, 1,000,000 hour MTTF[3] rating, and a rated annual workload of 180TB[4] transferred, the new HDD series delivers the performance and reliability needed for file and object storage workloads that typically utilize sequential data transfer operations. The drives are designed for 24/7 power-on operation and feature rotational vibration compensation technology to help provide consistent performance in tower and low-density style multi-drive enclosures, such as small NAS[5] platforms.

“Many customers with predominantly file oriented and fixed-content sequential write and read workloads are looking for cost-effective capacity for moderate workload storage applications”, said Noriaki Katakura, General Manager of Toshiba Electronics Europe, HDD Business Unit. “With our new MN Series HDD models we are providing a workload range within the high workload data centre work-horse Enterprise Capacity HDDs and relatively low workloads associated with client HDD models.”

The initial MN Series HDD models are available in 8TB, 6TB and 4TB capacities, each leveraging Toshiba’s proven Enterprise Capacity category HDD design legacy to deliver highly cost-effective storage for fixed-content workload-limited use cases. Targeted applications include mid-level, entry-level and small office/home office (SOHO) NAS storage enclosures, remote office backup and archival storage, and home multimedia data archive and fixedcontent object storage.

Notes:
[1] Definition of capacity: Toshiba defines a megabyte (MB) as 1,000,000 bytes, a gigabyte (GB) as 1,000,000,000 bytes and a terabyte (TB) as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1TB = 240 = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software and operating system, such as Microsoft Operating System and/or pre-installed software applications, or media content. Actual formatted capacity may vary.
[2] Read and write speed may vary depending on the host device, read and write conditions, and file size.
[3] MTTF (Mean Time to Failure) is not a guarantee or estimate of product life; it is a statistical value related to mean failure rates for a large number of products of the same type which may not accurately reflect actual operating life of the individual products captured under the MTTF value.
[4] Workload is a measure of the data throughput of the year, and it is defined as the amount of data written, read or verified by commands from host system.
[5] Network Attached Storage (NAS)
