When a CMOS logic IC is switched, what is the measure for the voltage-waveform (overshoot or undershoot) like the spike that occurs at the output terminal?

In general, the following measures are considered to reduce the spike voltage called overshoot/undershoot.

  • Increasing the width and reducing the length of power and GND traces (or using a multilayer board)
  • Adding a bypass capacitor between the power supply and GND pins (as close as possible to the IC)
  • Selecting a logic IC series with lower output current capability (Select a product with low output capacity).
  • Adding a damping resistor (R = 25 to 100 Ω) in series with the output pin
