Wearable Electronic Devices - Key Considerations

Wearable Electronic Devices - Key Considerations

The advent of wearable electronics is set to bring about the most radical changes to the clothing business since the industrial revolution over 150 years ago. Although it is still in it’s a relatively nascent phase, annual revenues generated from this sector are expected to ramp up considerably over the next decade - hitting the $70 billion mark by 2025, if IDTechEx forecasts prove to be correct. Regardless of the specific purpose that any item of wearable electronics serves, it needs to satisfy several fundamental criteria in order to see serious market uptake. Firstly, it has to be able to deliver a genuine value proposition to end users (whether it is for the delivery of infotainment, the implementation of communication links, the monitoring wellbeing, etc.). Then there is the associated cost. This must be such that it matches the value proposition accordingly. In addition, the electronics hardware the item incorporates must have suitable construction in terms of size, weight and shape that it will allow the user to wear it in complete comfort. The constituent components need to exhibit low power consumption, so that the overall system power budget is kept as low as possible and an acceptable battery lifespan can thereby be achieved. Finally, the electronics element cannot impinge heavily upon the aesthetic qualities of the clothing, otherwise the benefits of its functionality will be overridden by an unappealing appearance.

Given the wealth of opportunities it presents to the semiconductor industry, Toshiba has published a white paper which examines a broad range of different aspects that will influence the future of wearable electronic design. You can download it by visiting:
