Innovations in Automotive Image Recognition/Processing Technology will lead the way to an autonomous future

The automobile industry is steadily progressing towards an era where autonomous vehicles will become commonplace. Research conducted by Reuters indicates that technology relating to automated/assisted driving will represent around $25 billion in annual revenue by the end of this decade (almost 4x its current worth). This is based on the fact that several leading car manufacturers, including BMW, Audi, Toyota and Tesla, plus technology firms like Google, have all stated that they expect the rollout of autonomous vehicles to begin in earnest in the 2021 timeframe. Imaging technology will clearly be instrumental in the migration to semi-autonomous/autonomous operation, with the enhancements of vehicles’ advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) capabilities enabling high degrees of road safety to thereby be derived.

The number of image sensors being incorporated into vehicles is increasing substantially (covering everything from simple park assist mechanisms right through to collision avoidance functions). These are no longer just being seen in luxury models, they are now starting to witness uptake much further down the pricing spectrum, in mid-range and even economy models. As a result, the supporting image recognition and image processing properties have to be able to rise to the challenges ahead. Toshiba has composed a white paper on this particular subject. The document details not only the technical issues that the automotive industry is now facing (including improved responsiveness, elevated computational performance and lower power budget), but also the commercial/logistical implications that are involved (such as providing attractive price points and addressing more acute space constraints). It explains how use of next generation processor architectures and sophisticated algorithms are enabling the implementation of imaging systems that are optimised to meet impending automotive requirements - offering superior performance, while also being scalable, streamlined and cost effective.
