Delivering Bluetooth® beacons for next-generation retail

An increasing number of shoppers are glued to their mobile devices, even when shopping in-store. In an attempt to reach out to and engage with these consumers, many retailers are turning to a new technology: Bluetooth® beacons.

Beacons offer retailers a way to engage with consumers at many levels; storewide promotions can be offered to all shoppers while deeper or unique discounts can be delivered to preferred customers. Repeat buyers can also be informed of products that either enhance, complement or supersede their recent purchases.

While, at one level, beacons are very simple devices that transmit small packets of data (such as URLs) repetitively, there are a number of technical challenges to be overcome to launch a successful beacon to the market. To support beacon designs, Toshiba has developed the TC35678 Bluetooth System-on-Chip (SoC) that combines Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) baseband and RF blocks with an ARM® CPU core along with a general-purpose ADC and multiple general purpose I/O lines.

The SoC solution meets all of the critical needs of beacons including the imperative to reduce size: - the TC35678 can lower PCB area by 20% and requires up to 70% less external components than alternative approaches. It also offers an extremely low power solution, requiring a peak current of only 3.3mA and a sleep current of just 50nA. As a result, the technology can support beacons that run for months or years on a single coin-cell battery.
