Choosing Bluetooth® in healthcare applications

Choosing Bluetooth® in healthcare applications

As consumers become more health-conscious, Bluetooth is empowering a revolution that encompasses an ever-growing number of healthcare devices. This includes a variety of personal monitoring devices that use Bluetooth to log data and connect to the wider world.

Over several years and multiple generations, Bluetooth has evolved significantly, with the latest versions of the standard ensuring ultra-low levels of energy to operate. This makes the protocol the connection technology of choice for linking small, simple function, healthcare devices to the Internet via smartphones or tablets. Leading semiconductor companies are investing heavily to develop the latest technologies and associated support tools that allow designers to push portable healthcare to the next level.

The market growth has two main drivers; more consumers are buying devices - especially the wearable products, and designers are dreaming up new applications that measure and monitor ever more diverse parameters. In fact, the market is only limited by the designer's imagination and the availability of appropriate sensors.

The latest Bluetooth-based healthcare devices include infrared thermometers, scales that track Body Mass Index (BMI), sports bras that track breathing, heart rate, workout intensity and calories burned, intelligent nutrition bottles and even adhesive patches that monitor UV exposure or blood glucose levels.

As people are living longer, devices aimed specifically at the elderly ('ambient assisted living') include wearable 'panic buttons' that allow them to immediately communicate with healthcare professionals, wherever they may be.
