How Bluetooth® enables next-generation mobile healthcare

Modern consumers are increasingly sophisticated and ‘connected’, managing many aspects of their lives through their mobile digital devices. This desire for control extends to taking an active role in their own wellbeing through devices such as blood glucose monitors, pulse oximeters and heart rate monitors. Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE) is at the heart of these applications.

There are a number of considerations for engineers looking to deliver compelling Bluetooth-enabled medical devices. Long battery life is essential for user convenience, while space-efficient design supports portability. Given the potentially sensitive nature of the medical information being transmitted, information security is vital.

Toshiba's extensive range of Bluetooth solutions addresses these requirements. Among them are devices that support extended battery life, as they require currents of just 3.3mA while transmitting and a negligible 50nA while in deep sleep mode. Various sleep modes and configurable clocks allow the needs of the application to be balanced with the needs for low power operation.

High levels of integration ensure a variety of built-in features can be accommodated in package sizes as low as 5 x 5mm. For example, the TC35678 incorporates 256kB of built-in Flash ROM and 83kB of RAM that is dedicated to user programs. An on-chip RF matching network eases the design task and reduces the need for external components.

Information security extends to both the hardware and firmware with the TC35678 and TC35679 including more BLE 4.2 functions than any other device on the market. These devices pair securely and include elliptical curve cryptography as well as hardware protection of the on-chip Flash memory and a true random entropy seed code generator.
