Offloading the complexity of Field-Oriented Control (FOC) motor control implementations

While getting a brushless DC motor to rotate is relatively straightforward, ensuring that it is optimally and efficiently controlled requires significant effort. Microcontrollers are often used with the intention of implementing functions and features beyond just the motor control itself. Due to the mathematical complexity of sinusoidal commutation for approaches such as FOC, the microcontroller can end up being primarily engaged with the execution of the control algorithm. This limits the ability for the microcontroller to react in a reasonable time to other computing or peripheral demands. There are, however, other ways to break down this task. Here we review a family of microcontrollers that feature an Advanced Vector Engine (A-VE) that implements both the Park and Clarke transforms inside a hardware peripheral. Due to close coupling with the analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) and pulse-width-modulated (PWM) peripherals, the control requires minimal processor intervention, even when controlling two motors.
