Secure firmware rotation

Updating firmware of shipped devices has become technically easy. However, updating of device firmware in the field poses the risk of rewriting with malicious firmware. A device rewritten with malicious firmware may not only stop operating correctly but is also a vulnerability that may be exploited to attack other systems. Secure microcomputer firmware rotation is a feature with the following functions to detect unauthorized writing to a flash memory.

  • Falsified firmware is detected on boot.
  • When firmware is in an abnormal state, the operation stops autonomously to prevent secondary damage.
  • Firmware has a flash memory with a two-side configuration, and writing to the side under execution is prohibited.
