Ensuring signal quality: insertion power loss

Insertion Power Loss

TVS diodes (ESD protection diodes) are usually placed between the signal line and GND. Therefore, in steady-state operation, the diode is treated as a capacitance (terminal-to-terminal capacitance). These capacitances are included as impedances depending on the signal speed (particularly high-speed signal USB3. 0 and USB3. 1), resulting in signal loss (inserted power loss: Insertion Loss) and degraded signal quality.

The larger the terminal capacitance Ct, the larger the insertion power loss (the numerical value fluctuates is prone to significantly negative fluctuationly) and the signal speed cannot be followed. In order to prevent such signal degradation, it is necessary to select a TVS diode with the terminal capacitance suitable for the signal speed. We have a low-capacity lineup with low terminal capacitance for high-speed signals.
