Hardware and firmware for ADAS in challenging environmental conditions

Hardware and firmware for ADAS in challenging environmental conditions

One of the truths about driving is that the most likely cause of an accident is the person behind the wheel. In fact, a study by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) attributed 94% of all accidents to the driver.

Not surprisingly, governments and road safety organisations want to see this number fall dramatically and, unable to trust drivers to improve their habits, are increasingly looking to Automated Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to provide a solution.

As we place more reliance on the ADAS systems to warn us of hazards and, ultimately, to control the vehicle we place greater reliance on sensors to work faultlessly in a variety of challenging environmental conditions. In conventional systems the solution has been predominantly software-based, meaning that high-end, power-hungry digital signal processors (DSP) have been included in the ADAS system. In conventional automotive designs where ADAS systems are placed in hot areas (such as beneath the windscreen and behind the dashboard), the heat generated by the DSPs has been very difficult to dissipate.

Toshiba's engineering teams have developed image recognition processing architectures that significantly reduce the need for high-end DSPs. By applying a high degree of hardware integration and using sophisticated firmware they have been able to simplify the execution of frequently-used algorithms, such as those that check the image sensor integrity.

Toshiba has developed a white paper that discusses the various aspects of automotive imaging - including the benefits of image sensors with integrated processing. To download it click here:
