Replacement of enterprise hard drives in legacy systems

Although hard drives are becoming much more reliable, the odd failure will still sometimes occur. With today’s quality level of Enterprise drives reaching an MTTF up to 2.5 Mio hours, IT managers can expect around two or three drives to fail per year within a 1000-drive storage system during the warranty period of five years.

Eventually, identical replacement drives will be impossible to source and IT managers are faced with using drive with different characteristics, which is not straightforward. Toshiba has conducted some testing and written a report to clarify the issue.

In our test report you can learn more about:

  • Why replacement with different drives is likely to be more common in future
  • How the testing was carried out
  • Exact details of the ten tests that we performed
  • Which parameters are likely to lead to difficulties when replacing non-identical drives
