As environmental problems have become serious and efforts to conserve energy are commonly required in recent years, the amount of data handled has increased and the performance of equipment has improved. As a result, power consumption of server (data center) is increasing and energy saving measures are required. The focus of these measures is the problem of heat generation. In addition to increasing the heat generated as a result of increased power consumption by servers and other equipment, it also consumes a lot of power to operate the air conditioning necessary to cool those equipment. Therefore, servers and other equipment must aim for efficient use of electricity and the accompanying reduction of heat generation. Toshiba's MOSFETs combine latest generation process with a high heat dissipation package, contributing to the realization of a highly efficient power supply even in high-load operation, and has a performance suitable for power supply circuits of equipment such as servers. In addition to the problem of heat generation, the challenges required of servers to maintain stable operation are becoming increasingly more and more. By using high-performance semiconductor products with various protective functions, such as Toshiba's photocouplers, eFuse ICs, and TVS diodes (ESD protection diodes), problems that affect stable operation can be solved.
For the PFC-circuit of DC-DC power supply, a MOSFET with high VDSS and low RDS(ON) is suitable. By keeping the on-resistance low, heat generation and current consumption can be minimized, and output loss can also be reduced. Furthermore, Toshiba's Power MOSFET Series uses high heat dissipation packages to suppress heat generation.
Transistor output photocouplers are used for voltage-feedback to the primary side in DC-DC power supply circuit. Signal transmission at different potentials is required on the primary and secondary sides, and signal path isolation can be realized simply and reliably by using optical coupling type photocouplers. IC output photocouplers capable of high-speed communication for signal communication in the power supply circuit are also recommended.
In addition, it is important to comply with the safety standards established in each country. Toshiba photocouplers have been approved by UL1577VDE:EN60747-5-5, EN62368-1, etc.
Toshiba has provided the Switched Mode Power Supply Library to support power supply designs such as DC-DC power supply. In addition, the Reference Design Center publishes examples of the design of various power supply circuits, providing design ideas for high efficiency in various power supply circuits. Using LDO regulators, power line noise and ripple generated from AC-DC converter switching can be reduced for widely robustness.
eFuse ICs, TVS diodes (ESD protection diodes) help protect the power supply lines from power surges caused by hot-swapping. eFuse ICs incorporate various protective functions such as short-circuit, overcurrent, overvoltage, and inrush current suppression in a single package. It is useful for protecting equipment from surges such as overvoltage and overcurrent. eFuse ICs have IEC62368-1 compliance. The protection performance can be further improved by using a combination of high IPP TVS diode (ESD protection diode) and SBD.
TCKE805 series has a single chip of various protection functions, such as short-circuit, overvoltage clamping, and thermal shut down, enabling high-speed, multifunctional protection circuits up to 5A to be realized in small spaces. It also contributes to labor savings in equipment designs because it is certified as an internationally recognized safety standard IEC62368-1.
