Kaga Toshiba Forest Registered in Protected Planet as an OECM

Ishikawa and Kawasaki, Japan－Kaga Toshiba Forest in central Japan has been registered in the Protected Planet international database as an Other Effective area-based Conservation Measure (OECM)—an area outside formally designated and protected areas that makes a notable contribution to the conservation of biodiversity. The forest is natural woodland managed and conserved by Kaga Toshiba Electronics Corporation (Kaga Toshiba), a manufacturing company in the Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation Group, and is one of the Group’s many initiatives to promote environmental sustainability.

This is the latest recognition of the importance of Kaga Toshiba Forest, which was certified as a Nationally Certified Sustainably Managed Natural Site by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism^[1] in 2025. Registration as an OECM with Protected Planet recognizes that Kaga Toshiba’s work at Kaga Toshiba Forest contributes to the international biodiversity conservation framework and to the achievement of the global 30by30 target, which aims to conserve at least 30% of land, waters and seas by 2030.

Kaga Toshiba is located in Nomi City in Ishikawa Prefecture, a largely rural region of rolling hills and mountains on the Japan Sea coast of central Honshu. The company has long been interested in conserving the area’s natural landscape and biodiversity, and in fiscal year 2013 it turned intent into action by leasing 3.33 hectares of city-owned land in Tatsunokuchi Hillside Park in neighboring Nomi City^[2]. Today, Kaga Toshiba employees and their families, with the support and guidance from Nomi Satoyama Fan Club and the local government, maintain, protect and preserve the forest environment for now and into the future. Registration as an OECM recognizes the value and results of these long-standing forest management and conservation efforts.

OECM is an international framework for recognizing areas outside national parks and other protected areas that contribute to conservation of biodiversity conservation. In Japan, locations that win recognition as Nationally Certified Sustainably Managed Natural Sites and that also meet other specified requirements are registered in Protected Planet, a global database managed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre.

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Group will continue to promote environmental activities in collaboration with local communities, including contributing to Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (known as the "30by30 target").
