New MG06 Series delivers 25 percent capacity increase over prior generation models
Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH (TEE) today announces the 10TB[1] MG06 Series Enterprise Capacity HDD model line-up. Toshiba’s new MG06 Series offers a 25 percent capacity increase compared to prior generations, the MG05 Series, and enables models to be delivered at multiple capacity points to better leverage capacity refresh qualification cycles for OEMs/ODMs, infrastructure builders, cloud solution providers (CSPs) and system integrators.
In addition to larger capacity, the 10TB MG06 Series features a greater maximum sustained transfer rate, 237MiB/s[2] than the earlier MG05 Series, as well as a 25 percent increase in MTTF[3], with a rating of 2.5M hours. The drive provides a SATA 6Gbit/s interface[4] and 7,200 rpm performance. Additionally, the MG06 HDD supports emulated 512 Advanced Format (512e) technology for compatibility with legacy applications and operating environments; or 4K native sector technology for optimum performance in all-disk or hybrid storage platforms.
“CSPs, server and storage vendors and IT professionals face opportunities and challenges from the volume and value of digital data across organisations of all sizes,” said Noriaki Katakura, General Manager of Toshiba Electronics Europe, HDD Business Unit. “With the new MG06 Series of Enterprise Capacity HDDs delivering greater value and performance, Toshiba addresses the diverse needs of today’s cloud and business-critical applications.”
Designed to support higher storage density, the MG06 Series HDD introduces 10TB to Toshiba’s line-up while also updating 6TB and 8TB capacities. Based on Toshiba’s latest HDD architecture, the new models can save rack space to improve the operational efficiency of cloud-scale infrastructure. The MG06 Series is engineered for mid-line, nearline, and tier two business-critical server and storage system workloads; including servers supporting application workloads that benefit from high capacity per spindle; capacity-optimised data centre storage systems; and enterprise IT and data centre servers supporting workloads per HDD of up to 550TB total bytes written and read per year. All models feature Toshiba’s Persistent Write Cache Technology for peak performance and enterprise-grade data reliability. Models also support power mode management capabilities that conform to HDD industry standards.
Sample shipments of the MG06 SATA HDD model are now available. For more information on Toshiba’s line of industry-leading HDDs, please visit: https://toshiba.semicon-storage.com/eu/product/storage-products.html
Notes:
[1] Definition of capacity: Toshiba defines a megabyte (MB) as 1,000,000 bytes, a gigabyte (GB) as 1,000,000,000 bytes and a terabyte (TB) as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1TB = 240 bytes = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software and operating system, such as Microsoft Operating System and/or pre-installed software applications, or media content. Actual formatted capacity may vary.
[2] A kibibyte (KiB) means 210, or 1,024 bytes, a mebibyte (MiB) means 220, or 1,048,576 bytes, and a gibibyte (GiB) means 230, or 1,073,741,824 bytes.
[3] MTTF (Mean Time to Failure) is not a guarantee or estimate of product life; it is a statistical value related to mean failure rates for a large number of products which may not accurately reflect actual operation. Actual operating life of the product may be different from the MTTF.
[4] Read and write speed may vary depending on the host device, read and write conditions, and file size. Company names, product names, and service names mentioned herein may be trademarks of their respective registrants and/or owners.
