Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH (“Toshiba”) announced the launch of four dual-channel digital isolators designed to help reduce power consumption and provide flexible signal isolation, extending its low-power industrial digital isolator line-up. The DCL32xx00 series targets applications including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), I/O interfaces, sensors, actuators, motor-control systems, inverters and switching power supplies.
Industrial control systems increasingly must transfer digital signals safely between circuits operating at different electrical potentials, all while maintaining stable operation in the presence of switching noise and other electrical disturbances. At the same time, designers are under pressure to reduce system power consumption while fitting isolation functions into ever more compact equipment.
The DCL32xx00 digital isolator series addresses those requirements with typical operating current consumption of 0.2mA per channel at a 1Mbps data rate, while supporting data transmission at up to 25Mbps. They use Toshiba's magnetic-coupling isolation technology, together with new circuit technology in the isolation signal-transmission section, to support low-power, stable data transmission.
Each device is rated for a minimum isolation voltage of 3,000Vrms for 60 seconds and offers 30kV/µs minimum common-mode transient immunity (CMTI), supporting stable signal transmission in the presence of rapid common-mode voltage changes. The devices operate across a -40°C to 125°C temperature range. A 2.25V to 5.5V supply-voltage range supports use with a variety of industrial logic and control circuits, while the SOIC8-N package provides an industry-standard footprint for dual-channel isolation.
The four products in the DCL32xx00 series provide two channel-direction options. The DCL320C00 and DCL320D00 offer two forward channels for applications that require two digital signals to cross the isolation barrier in the same direction, supporting unidirectional digital signal transmission like I2C communications. The DCL321C00 and DCL321D00 provide one forward and one reverse channel, making them suitable for interfaces that require transmit and receive paths in opposite directions, such as UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter) communications.
The C00 and D00 variants differ in their default output logic when the input is undefined, like after power-on or when the input is floating. This allows designers to select either a default-low or default-high output state to suit the behaviour required by the system.
By adding a low-power dual-channel option to its digital isolator portfolio, Toshiba gives industrial designers additional flexibility when selecting devices according to channel count, signal direction, data rate, power budget and board-space requirements.
