Product News 2018-12
Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (“Toshiba”) has launched the 600 V discrete IGBT “GT50J123” that is suitable for air conditioners’ PFC applications.
GT50J123 has expanded its Safe Operating Area[Notes] (SOA) compared with the existing product GT50JR22 so that it is less likely to break down during abnormal operation such as lightning surges and power supply voltage fluctuation.
[Notes]
The Safe Operating Area of a discrete IGBT describes the area of currents and voltages where the IGBT can be used without breaking down or deteriorating.
Though the operating range of an IGBT is limited by its absolute maximum ratings such as maximum voltage, maximum current and maximum collector power dissipation, even when the IGBT is used in switching operation within the maximum ratings, it may break down or deteriorate in its characteristics. The on-state needs to be designed within the Safe Operating Area, and its turn-off operation needs to be within the Reverse Bias Safe Operating Area. As the areas that are restricted differ depending on how the products are designed, please check the respective data sheets.
