Toshiba Launches Small 80V Electronic Fuse (eFuse IC) Suitable for 48V Power Line Protection in Industrial Equipment

KAWASAKI, Japan—Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation ("Toshiba") has added "TCKE1401NM," an 80V-rated electronic fuse (eFuse IC), to its lineup of eFuse ICs with multiple built-in power line protection functions. Shipments start today.

The new product adopts the VQFN24D package, an industry-leading[1] small package for 80V-rated eFuse ICs, that contributes to improved safety in power line protection circuits and reduced PCB size for industrial equipment.

Driven by the demand for higher output power and improved efficiency, adoption of 48V power systems is advancing in servers, network equipment, factory automation equipment, robots, and other industrial equipment. This shift requires power line protection circuits that provide high voltage tolerances and multiple protection functions.

An eFuse IC is a semiconductor fuse that protects downstream circuits from abnormal current, abnormal voltage, and other fault conditions. In addition to the short-circuit protection provided by conventional physical fuses[2], it integrates multiple protection functions—including overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection, reverse current blocking, input reverse polarity protection, and thermal shutdown—into a single chip, enabling more functional and compact power line protection circuits.

TCKE1401NM has an 80V rating and supports a wide operating voltage range, from 4.7V to 75V. Its high voltage tolerance allows it to be used for power line protection in 24V, 48V, and 54V systems. In addition, low On-resistance (RON) of 44.5mΩ (typ.) helps improve equipment efficiency by reducing power loss during operation. Adoption of a 4.0×4.0mm (typ.) VQFN24D package contributes to reduced PCB size.

The eFuse IC's main protection functions include current limiting that controls output current if overcurrent occurs, and output shutdown that turns off output in the event of overvoltage. The operating thresholds for both functions can be set with external resistors. It also has true reverse current blocking and reverse-connection protection, which use external MOSFETs, to protect both the IC itself and downstream circuits.

The new eFuse IC also features a FLAG function[3] that notifies external circuits of abnormal conditions, a power-good function[4] that indicates the status of the output voltage, and an output current monitor function. The thermal shutdown function immediately turns off the eFuse IC when an unexpected short circuit or abnormal heat generation occurs, protecting downstream circuits. The recovery method from abnormal conditions can be switched between two operating modes: auto-retry, in which the eFuse IC recovers automatically; and latch-off, in which recovery is triggered by an external signal.

Toshiba will continue to develop eFuse ICs that enhance safety and reliability in power line protection, and will expand its product lineup to meet a wide range of needs.
