Toshiba Launches Industry's First microUSB Adaptor Module Compliant with the TransferJet™ Close Proximity Wireless Transfer Standard

TOKYO, Japan, – Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) announced it will launch the industry's first1 microUSB adaptor module compliant with the TransferJet™ close proximity wireless transfer technology standard. Mass production of this microUSB adaptor module, TJM35420MU, is scheduled to begin in March 2013 for sales to smartphone and tablet manufacturers and to PC peripheral equipment manufacturers.

The TJM35420MU is the industry's first TransferJet™ microUSB adaptor module integrating a TransferJet™ transceiver IC, a coupler, an RF filter, peripheral passive parts, and a USB connection circuit. TransferJet™ communications can be implemented in Android™ devices2, such as smartphones and tablets, that have a microUSB port by inserting this module in the port and installing application software for Android™

TransferJet™-enabled devices can transfer a one-minute high-definition movie in approximately three seconds3. TransferJet™ is expected to be widely adopted for smartphones, tablets, and various other devices. Toshiba will continue to develop and commercialize transceiver ICs and modules compliant with TransferJet™

Toshiba will showcase, for reference, a tablet equipped with a prototype of this microUSB adaptor module, and a TransferJet™-enabled SDHC memory card, which is under development, at the 2013 International CES, the world's biggest consumer technology-related trade show, to be held from January 8 to 11, 2013, in Las Vegas, U.S.A.

Background and objectives

Demand is surging for simple yet high-speed sharing of large multimedia files, such as photos, movies, and audio data among individuals. In view of this demand, Toshiba has commercialize products, including a transceiver IC, a compact wireless module, a microSDIO card, and a USB adaptor module, that are compliant with the TransferJet™ standard for close proximity wireless transfer technology allowing data transfer just by touching two devices together. The latest addition to the line-up is a microUSB adaptor module that can be easily attached to smartphones and other mobile devices.

TransferJet™ is a close proximity wireless transfer technology standard promoted by the TransferJet™ Consortium whose membership consists of 45 companies (as of January 8, 2013), including Toshiba. TransferJet™ technology provides simple connection and high-speed data transfer with low power consumption just by selecting on the screen of a device the data file to be transferred and by touching the receiving device with that device. Applications of TransferJet™ technology is expected to expand when combined with various devices and technologies, such as digital signage and Near Field Communications (NFC).
