With increasing resolution and image quality of multimedia content, huge amounts of data are being transferred between cameras, LCDs and other peripheral devices. These transfers require high speed data rates to keep up with today’s baseband and application processors. Toshiba offers interface bridges called Mobile Peripheral Devices (MPDs) that support high-speed data transfer protocols such as MIPI®, LVDS, DisplayPort® and HDMI®. Toshiba MPDs can not only transfer data at high speeds, but also bridge between main processors and peripherals with different interfaces. Toshiba also offers an extensive portfolio of peripheral devices including IO expanders and SC card controllers.

Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 Uses Toshiba Bridge Chip

The Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 is the latest development kit for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset for 3D gaming. The Development Kit 2 uses the Toshiba TC358779XBG HDMI to DSI bridge chip. The Toshiba chip is the only part on the market that can convert directly from HDMI used in PCs and set-top boxes to MIPI®-DSI used in mobile panels, and preserve the picture quality. It is a more integrated version of earlier chips enabling smaller and lighter board designs important to head-mounted devices. Toshiba bridge and buffer ICs support various serial data transfer protocols, such as MIPI, LVDS, DisplayPort and HDMI, to facilitate the designing of cellular phones.
The I/O expander IC enables system expansion by providing connectivity to general-purpose I/O ports, keypads, LEDs and timers. It can be used for a wide range of applications, such as cell phones, digital cameras and printers.
Toshiba is also developing various support ICs for the main processor, such as an SD card host controller that will enable high-speed data transfer to an SD card.
