Lab testing of MG09 HDDs in a SAN system

When building storage solutions for small- to medium-sized businesses (SMB), the ultimate system performance cannot be judged by the storage rack specification alone as the selected hard disk drives (HDDs) can have a material impact.

Toshiba set out to review this under laboratory conditions using a QSAN XCubeSAN XS3300 SAN storage product combined with their Enterprise Capacity MG-series HDDs. The exact configuration was QSAN’s XS3324D (a 4U/24 bay fully integrated storage area network (SAN) block-storage solution) with twenty-four of Toshiba’s 18TB SAS 12Gb/s MG09SCA18TE HDDs.

To deliver the highest performance consistency, all 24 HDDs (432TB gross capacity) were configured into a single RAID10 “pool” giving 216TB net capacity. This base array was then evaluated and found to deliver consistent performance.
