Zener diode for overvoltage protection
Zener diodes are suitable for protecting power supply lines, power supply control lines, and can protect internal circuits and ICs from overvoltages induced by hot plugs, etc.
The power supply line is susceptible to static electricity (ESD) as well as other overvoltage pulses and must be protected. It may not be clear why a circuit broke, but it is often the case that the cause was an overvoltage such as switching of inductive loads. Zener diodes make it easier and safer to protect circuits and ICs.
