Quad-Channel Standard Digital Isolators Contributing to Lower Power Consumption in Industrial Equipment

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation ("Toshiba") has launched two products in the DCL341x0B Series, quad‑channel standard digital isolators for industrial equipment that achieve a low operating current of 0.2mA[1] per channel, support mid‑speed[2] communications, and feature a small SSOP16 package.
The new lineup consists of two products: the DCL341L0B, which features a default output logic[3] of Low, and the DCL341H0B, which features a default output logic of High. Both products offer a 4‑channel configuration with three forward channels and one reverse channel.

In recent years, industrial equipment such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), actuators, and inverters has increasingly required measures to prevent equipment failures, the propagation of abnormal conditions, and malfunctions caused by noise, which continue to increase as devices operate at higher speeds. To address these issues, electrical isolation that safely and reliably transmit signals between circuits operating at different voltage potentials, such as high‑voltage and low‑voltage systems, is essential. In addition, there is growing demand for highly reliable isolation devices that can maintain stable operation even in noisy environments. As equipment continues to become more compact, isolation devices are also required more than ever to offer smaller size, higher reliability, and longer service life.
Meanwhile, reducing overall system power consumption has become an important challenge in achieving carbon neutrality, and there is growing demand for lower power consumption in isolation devices as well.

The new products use Toshiba’s proprietary magnetic coupling isolation transmission technology[4] to meet market requirements for high reliability and long service life. In addition, by incorporating Toshiba’s newly developed proprietary circuit technology in the isolation signal transmission section, they achieve low power consumption of 0.2mA per channel while maintaining stable data transmission at speeds of up to 25Mbps (max).
The new products are also rated for an isolation voltage of 3000Vrms (min) and operate over a wide operating temperature range of –40 to 125°C and a wide supply voltage range of 2.25 to 5.5V.
These features contribute to stable equipment operation and low power consumption.
The adoption of an industry‑standard small SSOP16 package addresses the demand for compact designs.

The new products feature a quad‑channel configuration with three forward channels and one reverse channel, making them suitable for multi‑channel communication systems such as SPI[5]-based I/O interfaces.

Toshiba is mass‑producing the "DCL54xx01A Series" and the "DCL52xx00 Series" as standard digital isolators for industrial equipment supporting high‑speed data communication, as well as the "DCM34xx01 Series" and the "DCM32xx00 Series" as standard digital isolators for automotive applications, enabling customers to select products according to application requirements.

Toshiba will continue to expand its lineup of digital isolators for industrial and automotive equipment by broadening channel count and package options and by pursuing further performance improvements to contribute to the realization of carbon neutrality. Together with optically coupled isolators such as photocouplers, Toshiba will provide high‑quality isolation devices that support stable operation in communication and control systems requiring electrical isolation.

Features

  1. Low operating current consumption
  2. Adoption of an industry‑standard small package

Features Explanation

1. Low operating current

Figure 1. Comparison of operating current per channel between the DCL541x01A Series and the new products
Figure 1. Comparison of operating current per channel between the DCL541x01A Series and the new products

The DCL341x0B series achieves a low current consumption of 0.2mA per channel by adopting a new proprietary circuitry technique in the isolated signal‑transmission section. This contributes to reduced power consumption in industrial equipment. In addition, compared with the existing high‑speed digital isolator DCL541x01A Series, the operating current per channel is approximately 95% lower[1].

2. Adoption of an industry‑standard small package

Figure 2. Comparison of package dimensions between SOIC16‑W and SSOP16

The DCL341x0B Series adopts an industry‑standard small SSOP16 package that offers mounting compatibility for industrial equipment. This contributes to optimized board layout through miniaturization and supports multi‑sourcing by using a standard package. In addition, compared with the SOIC16‑W package used in Toshiba’s existing products, the package mounting area is approximately 72% smaller[6].
