Toshiba Releases Three-Phase Gate Driver ICs that Can Accommodate a Wide Range of Applications

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation ("Toshiba") has launched four products of TB67Z83xxFTG Series three-phase gate driver ICs and four products of TB67Z85xxFTG Series three-phase gate driver ICs for three-phase brushless DC motors used for consumer and industrial equipment. By combining the new products with a microcontroller as motor controller and MOSFETs, it is possible to drive brushless DC motors for a wide range of applications, providing a total solution.

The new products have a built-in circuit that can drive three phases of high-side and low-side MOSFETs. Gate drive current of external MOSFETs can be set from 10mA to 1A[1] (peak) for source current and from 20mA to 2A[1] (peak) for sink current. VM supply voltage[2] can be used in a wide operating range from 8 to 75V and VDRAIN voltage[3] can be used in a wide operating range from 6 to 75V. This allows for a wide range of applications such as power tools, cleaners, and industrial robots. In addition, the maximum power supply current (Standby) is 1μA, thereby providing low current consumption and extending standby time for battery-driven applications. Furthermore, built-in various protection functions improve the reliability of the system. In addition to the protection functions such as the under voltage lockout and the thermal shutdown circuit for the devices themselves, the new products have the gate drive voltage fault detection and the over current detection to protect external MOSFETs.

The four new products "TB67Z833SFTG, TB67Z833HFTG, TB67Z853SFTG and TB67Z853HFTG" have built-in three channels of current sense amplifiers which can lead to saving space on the board by reducing external components.
There are also four products “TB67Z830SFTG, TB67Z830HFTG, TB67Z850SFTG and TB67Z850HFTG" without current sense amplifiers to meet other application requirements.

Toshiba will continue to develop products for a wide range of applications and to provide total solutions that contribute to design simplification, board area reduction and total cost reduction.

When driving a three-phase brushless DC motor with a configuration of microcontroller as motor controller, gate driver IC and MOSFETs, Toshiba's lineup did not previously include gate driver ICs. Therefore, Toshiba has launched new gate driver ICs and has expanded its product lineup to provide total solutions for a variety of three-phase brushless DC motors.

2. Wide operating range

VM supply voltage, which is the supply voltage for the IC, can be used in a wide operating range from 8 to 75V and VDRAIN voltage, which is the power supply voltage for the motor, can be used in a wide operating range from 6 to 75V. In addition, gate drive current of external MOSFETs can be set from 10mA to 1A (peak) for source current and from 20mA to 2A (peak) for sink current.
The new products can be used for a wide range of applications such as power tools, cleaners, and industrial robots.

3. Built-in various protection functions

The protection functions such as the under voltage lockout and the thermal shutdown circuit for the devices themselves, the new products have the gate drive voltage fault detection and the over current detection to protect external MOSFETs. This contributes to improving the reliability of the system.

4. Low power supply current (Standby)

The new products can keep ISTBY (IVM+IVDRAIN)=1μA (max) in standby mode. This matter extends the standby time in battery-driven applications.
