What is a PIN diode?

This is a circuit diagram symbol for a PIN diode.

A PIN diode is a diode with a near intrinsic semiconductor region (I region) between the typical p-type and n-type regions.
A PIN diode is ideal for automatic gain control (AGC) and transmit/receive switching applications because it can control the series RF resistance via forward current.
