What are the advantages of using eFuse ICs (electronic fuses) over glass fuses and PTC thermistors (polyswitches, polyfuses)?

The glass fuse must be replaced after eliminating the cause of overcurrent flow if it is blown due to over current flow. In addition, the PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) automatically recovers when the over-current condition is released, but both the glass fuse and PTC thermistor (hereafter referred to as the conventional fuse) take a long time to shut off or limit the current. In contrast, if our eFuse IC detects an excessive current, it shuts down the overcurrent in a very short period of time, less than 1/1000 (hundreds of ns) of conventional fuses. When the overcurrent condition is cleared, the power can be turned on again automatically or by an external reset signal, thus improving the maintainability of the system. In addition to overcurrent, eFuse IC also incorporates a wide range of built-in protective functions, such as overvoltage, thermal shutdown and undervoltage lockout (UVLO), as well as a slew-rate control function that slowly boosts the output voltage, enabling robust protection for a variety of devices, such as AVs and ICT equipment.
