Zener Diodes in Small SOD-882 Packages for Surge Protection to Enhance Equipment Reliability―Providing protection against switching surges and overvoltage pulses in applications with limited board space―

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation ("Toshiba") has expanded its lineup of Zener diodes, which protect semiconductor devices and power supply lines from overvoltage conditions such as switching surges and electrostatic discharge (ESD), by adding the CTZ series in a small SOD-882 (CST2) package. The CTZ series offers 20 products with Zener voltages ranging from 5.6V to 36V.

In recent years, demand has been increasing in industrial and consumer equipment for overvoltage protection solutions that can be implemented within limited board space, driven by the trend toward miniaturization and higher-density mounting. In addition, power supply lines and power control lines require protection not only against short-duration surges such as ESD, but also against relatively long pulse-width overvoltages caused by switching surges and inductive loads.

The CTZ series consists of Zener diodes that protect semiconductor devices from switching surges and induced lightning surges ranging from the microsecond to millisecond order, as well as overvoltages with characteristics close to DC. The lineup includes 20 Zener voltage options from 5.6V to 36V, allowing selection according to circuit voltage requirements, including low-voltage logic power supplies, various power control lines, and 12V and 24V power supply lines.

The series adopts a leadless SOD-882 (CST2) package measuring 1.0×0.6×0.38mm (typ.). Compared with Toshiba's conventional CEZ series in the leaded SOD-523 (ESC) package with equivalent characteristics, the mounting area can be reduced by approximately 53%, making installation easier on densely populated circuit boards and in compact equipment. As a result, Toshiba now offers ten package options for surge protection Zener diodes, providing greater design flexibility according to mounting space, required protection performance, and target line voltage conditions.

The CTZ series expands the available options for surge protection Zener diodes according to target line voltage requirements and mounting space constraints. It facilitates the implementation of surge protection measures even in increasingly compact electronic equipment and helps improve circuit design flexibility.

Toshiba will continue to expand its lineup of surge protection Zener diodes, contributing to the miniaturization and improved reliability of electronic equipment.

Features

  1. Protection against switching surges and long pulse width overvoltages
  2. Lineup of 20 products with Zener voltages ranging from 5.6V to 36V
  3. Small SOD-882 (CST2) package helps reduce board space requirements

Features Explanation

1. Protection against switching surges and long pulse width overvoltages

Figure 1. Application areas of ESD protection diodes and Zener diodes suitable for overvoltage protection
Figure 1. Application areas of ESD protection diodes and Zener diodes suitable for overvoltage protection

In electronic equipment, overvoltages may be applied to power supply lines and signal lines due to electrostatic discharge (ESD) entering through connectors, power on/off switching, the switching of inductive loads, and the connection or disconnection of external equipment. ESD protection diodes are mainly used to protect against short-duration overvoltage pulses. In contrast, surge protection Zener diodes are also suitable for protecting against overvoltages with relatively long pulse widths and characteristics close to DC, such as switching surges and induced lightning surges.

The CTZ series clamps such overvoltages near a specified voltage level, helping to reduce voltage stress on downstream semiconductor devices and circuits. It is particularly suitable for applications such as power supply lines, power control lines, and low-speed signal lines, where protection against not only ESD but also switching surges is required.

2. Lineup of 20 products with Zener voltages ranging from 5.6V to 36V

When selecting a Zener diode for overvoltage protection, it is necessary to choose an appropriate Zener voltage based on the normal operating voltage of the protected line and the withstand voltage of downstream devices. The CTZ series offers 20 products with Zener voltages ranging from 5.6V to 36V, making it suitable for a wide range of circuit requirements, including low-voltage logic power supplies, power lines for microcontroller peripherals, various control lines, and 12V and 24V power supply lines.

In addition, the series adopts nominal values based on the E24 series[1], making it easier to select products in accordance with commonly used voltage values and to replace existing designs or expand them into derivative products.

3. Small SOD-882 (CST2) package helps reduce board space requirements

In industrial and consumer equipment, the number of components mounted on circuit boards continues to increase as additional functions are incorporated and mounting density rises, while available mounting space is becoming more limited due to ongoing equipment miniaturization. The CTZ series adopts a leadless SOD-882 (CST2) package measuring 1.0×0.6×0.38mm (typ.). Compared with Toshiba's conventional CEZ series in the leaded SOD-523 (ESC) package with equivalent characteristics, the mounting area can be reduced by approximately 53%.

This makes it easier to place protection devices near connectors, around power management ICs, and around microcontrollers. It also helps improve board layout flexibility, particularly in applications where protection devices need to be located close to surge entry points or where multiple lines require individual protection.
