The output waveform of a CMOS logic IC has transients that look like spikes. What can I do to prevent this?

Generally, high-speed logic ICs with high output current capability tend to have voltage spikes called overshoot and undershoot.

The following countermeasures can be considered:

  • Increasing the width and reducing the length of power and GND traces (or using a multilayer board)
  • Adding a bypass capacitor between the power supply and GND pins (as close as possible to the IC)
  • Selecting a logic IC series with lower output current capability
  • Adding a damping resistor (R = 25 to 100 Ω) in series with the output pin
