In a photovoltaic-output photocoupler, the light emitted by an LED is received by a photodiode array (PDA), which converts it into an output voltage.
Photovoltaic-output photocouplers can be used to create a MOSFET gate driver without using an external secondary-side power supply.
Toshiba offers general-purpose photovoltaic-output photocouplers and those having an internal shunt resistor for gate capacitance discharge.

In a photovoltaic-output photocoupler, the light emitted by an LED is received by a PDA, which in turn converts it into a voltage to drive the gate of a MOSFET. Since the input (LED) and output (PDA) sides of the photocoupler are electrically isolated, it reduces the transfer of noise generated on the MOSFET side to the CPU side.
