Tell me about the devices suitable for use as level shifters.

There are three types of level shifters:

  1. Using single-voltage logic ICs (Figure 1)
    The single-supply level shift type provides voltage-level translation using a 5 V-tolerant input (for down translation) or a TTL-level input (for up translation). For details, please refer to “What options do I have to perform level shifting from 5 V to 3.3 V and vice versa?” in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page.
  2. Using dual-voltage logic ICs: level-shifting bus buffer type (Figure 2)
    The bus buffer type provides sufficient drive capability, making it suitable for high-speed level-shifting.
  3. Using dual-voltage logic ICs: level-shifting bus switch type (Figure 3)
    The bus switch type uses pullup resistors for level-shifting. It only transmits the signals from input to output and has no inherent drive capability.
